Hey team!
We all know that we should be eating more fruits and vegetables as part of our healthy nutrition plans... but even if we do, are we eating enough variety to get optimal nutrition and to support our weight loss or performance nutrition goals?
You may have heard the phrase "eat the rainbow" before, which definitely does not mean snacking on Skittles! It actually refers to simply trying to eat as many different colors of fruits and vegetables as possible.
What you may not know is that each color typically has certain healthy micronutrients, and by eating a variety of colors, you have a much better chance of consuming varied nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
If your goal includes weight loss, improved immunity, better general health and wellbeing, or maximum performance in work or sport, consuming these micronutrients can help you reach your goals. Each one has a specific role in the body, and getting them in adequate amounts will keep all of the millions of processes in your body running as well as possible.
Even adding one colorful fruit or vegetable to each meal can go a long way, and the next time you're shopping for healthy foods, try to get a bit more color variety into your shopping basket.
In a future blog, I'll detail what each color is associated with in terms of health and nutrition... did you know that even "white" vegetables have beneficial compounds?
Until next time, keep fit, eat well, and have fun!
